In honor of the late Maurice Washington, the beloved Vice President and Dean of Morehouse College who was a father figure to the students he served, Morehouse is creating a new scholarship that will continue his esteemed legacy of supporting scholars in pursuit of excellence. The Dean Maurice Washington Endowed Scholarship in Leadership and Service has been established to fund the education of servant leaders who possess the values that made Dean Washington a change agent and man of distinction at Morehouse College.
Dean Washington passed away on Feb. 13, 2021, after dedicating more than 30 years to a career that he loved as a nationally-lauded higher education administrator. He spent 13 of those years at Morehouse advocating on behalf of students of all backgrounds to ensure that they had what they needed for holistic development and academic success. His spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of the students he mentored, the colleagues he inspired, the friends he cherished, the family he adored, and the Maurice Washington Endowed Scholarship recipients who will excel in his honor.

Thomas, President of Morehouse College. “His leadership was motivated by his commitment to serve others. His integrity was never in question. He was a strong believer in and practitioner of social justice. Many of our students viewed him as a role model."
