Fifty years ago, the "World Famous Morehouse Glee Club" embarked on a pilgrimage to five African nations to reconnect with the rhythms of the motherland. The monumental tour, led by beloved director, "Doc" Dr. Wendell P. Whalum '52, would inspire the innovative sound that has launched the Glee Club into choral history as an international treasure committed to building community and a greater understanding of the African diaspora through music excellence.
In commemoration of that pivotal 1972 tour, the Morehouse Glee Club is returning to Africa from June 26 - July 9, 2022, for a four-city Nigerian tour and cultural exploration of music heritage. Our GOAL is to raise $100,000 (and unlock a special 1:1 matching challenge to bring the total to $200,000). Glee Club Director Dr. David Morrow and assistant music professor Timothy Miller will lead the group of 35 Morehouse choral ambassadors as they sing on a world stage with mass choirs in the cities of Abuja, Lagos, Uyo and Enugu. The Glee Club will also visit universities and secondary schools to explore their historical ties to the nation and meet Nigerian students.
The visit is expected to enrich the Glee Club's distinctive musical stylings and forge new bonds of brotherhood between Morehouse College students and those within the African nation. After faculty and Glee Club students returned from Nigeria in 1972, they expanded their repertoire, bringing African drumming and songs sung in the languages of Igbo and Yoruba back with them. High school and college choirs throughout the country often sing in Yorùbá, showing the long-term impact of this exchange.
